The Engineer's Field Book
Specification Overview
The Engineer's Field Book is a structured hardcover notebook engineered for hardware, product, and field engineers who require a reliable, durable, and legally defensible documentation instrument. It is not a journal. It is not a lifestyle product. It is a precision documentation tool built to perform under field conditions and to function as an evidentiary record.
Interior Architecture: Five-Zone System
Each notebook is organized into five discrete functional zones, sequenced to support a complete engineering workflow:
- Calendar — Project timeline and scheduling reference
- Register (Decision Log) — Structured decision records with fields for the decision, options considered, rationale, and reversibility classification
- Meetings — Dedicated meeting documentation pages with date, attendees, and action item fields
- Daily Notes / Open Grid — Unruled grid pages for technical sketches, calculations, and freeform documentation
- Reference — Fixed reference material for field use
Decision Record System
The Register section implements a structured Decision Record format on every page. Each entry captures: the decision made, the options that were evaluated, the rationale for the selected option, and whether the decision is reversible or irreversible. This format is not available in any competing notebook product. It is designed to satisfy engineering review, audit, and post-mortem requirements without requiring a separate documentation system.
Writing Surface: Stone Paper
Pages are manufactured from stone paper — a CaCO3/HDPE composite material. Stone paper is waterproof, tear-resistant, and has zero ink absorption. It accepts ballpoint, gel, and technical pen ink in any weather condition, including rain, high humidity, and extreme temperature. It does not bleed, feather, or warp under moisture exposure.
Binding: Smyth-Sewn PUR
The notebook uses Smyth-sewn PUR binding. Signatures are sewn together before being bonded with polyurethane reactive adhesive. The result is a binding that lays completely flat at any page without manual pressure, does not crack under repeated use, and maintains structural integrity across the full service life of the notebook.
Sequential Numbering and Dated Entries
All pages are sequentially numbered. Entry fields include date prompts. The notebook is structured to function as an evidentiary record — page sequence and date continuity are maintained throughout, supporting chain-of-custody documentation requirements.
Ownership and Confidentiality Registration
The inside front cover contains a seven-field ownership and confidentiality registration spread. Fields include owner name, organization, project assignment, contact information, confidentiality classification, and return instructions. This spread is formatted for institutional use.
Serial Number and Digital Companion
Each notebook is assigned a unique serial number, printed on the cover and registered in the companion system. A QR code links the physical notebook to a free digital companion application. The application provides:
- Notebook registration and ownership record
- Page scanning and OCR archiving to a permanent, searchable digital record
- Reorder alert when the notebook approaches capacity
The digital archive is indexed by serial number and accessible via the companion app. No subscription is required.
